GHOSTS

Do ghosts really exist? Are some places truly haunted?

The answer to both questions is very likely "yes."

Vision

However, the reality of ghosts and hauntings isn't always as clear-cut as some would have you believe. Real-life stories and local legends abound, but sorting out the details can be very painstaking work.

As a general guideline to help you sort out ghosts and hauntings, you should be aware that investigation of these phenomena over the last 100-plus years has pointed in a number of directions.

In many cases, a "ghost" can often seem to be exactly what we commonly think it to be: the surviving "spirit" of someone who's has actually passed on. For a variety of reasons, this person lingers at a particular place, seems to retain a good bit of the intelligence and personality that they had when alive, and even interacts in assorted ways with those of us still around.

However, there is another category which does not necessarily involve the surviving personality, and this second category has more to do with the "memory" left behind by people and events. A physical location seems to both "record" and "play back" impressions of people who have been there, and also events that took place at the site.

This "place memory" is sometimes picked up by those who visit the site -- curiously enough, it may play back for some visitors and not at all for others. This might have something to do with the innate psychic sensitivity of the visitor; that is, some people are simply more sensitive than others and will pick up on whatever is there. There are some fascinating indicators that this "play back" might be related to fluctuations of electromagnetic fields at the location, and this concept is a new research frontier for modern ghost hunters.

For some visitors to a haunted site, both the "ghosts" and the "place memories" might be seen, heard, or felt. To be truthful, we don't really understand how this occurs, nor why it happens to some and not to others. And so we continue to investigate.

As you will see in the video, the Penitentiary seems to hold both traditional ghosts and a very vivid place memories.
